BP announces new UK bioethanol plant

Added: 29, June 11.04

I have just purchased a Saab biopower and I am looking forward to more ethanol pumps being opened in London. I believe that the government must raise awareness of the need to promote the use of fuel ethanol and that further fiscal incentives for its production, distribution and consumption in the UK are necessary. At my work place, the International Sugar Organization, we have produced several studies on ethanol from sugar and other crops, with remarkable findings. Production of ethanol is growing strongly worldwide and so is consumption. For instance, the European consumption of fuel ethanol is growing at 70% a year (to reach 3 bln litres in 2007) but even in more mature markets, like Brazil (15 bln litres) and the US (23 bln litres), consumption is growing at over 20% a year. This is the right time for UK policy makers to help this rapidly groing market become mainstream in the near future.

I think that biofuels are great, they should have been around a lot sooner. I think that the government has servely let us down and should have done something about this a long time ago as they have known about biofuel for years now! I think that now that biofuel is on everybodies mind the government should be making more of an effort to get biofuel at every petrol stationg in the country. They claim to want to reduce CO2 emissions and yet they still want to keep selling petrol and diesel only because they can make loads of money from it, they earn to much as it is and they dont seem to be doing anything about it.

Excellent idea! We need fueling stations in the london areas where it would make a real difference to the environment and accessability for the london and home counties public.

UK Government gives bioethanol a boost

Added: 26, July 11.20

I think it is vital we move to a fuel type that is not only better for the environment but also one that ensures we are not so dependent on oil producing nations.

After all, as oil levels continue to fall, the absence of an alternative in our oil dependent economy will shape political decisions. If it doesnt already and this will be massively damaging to international human relations.

No shame in green profits, Sir Richard Branson tells Saab

I am very excited at the prospects of E85. I can only hope Canada will follow suit, considering that there are over 50 vehicles currently on the road that are compatible. My next car will hopefully be a BioPower Saab.

I live in the US, and am deeply interested in acquiring a biopower Saab....is there any hope?! I am a very happy Saab owner and want to move off petro fuels as quickly as possible. Our other car is a diesel VW which we run on B99. Id love to stick with Saab for either diesel or bioethanol.

As long term SAAB fan & driver its very encouraging, but there needs to be a tax incentive to offset the lower mpg, for it to take off.

No budge on budget, says Saab

What do you expect from a government which is only interested in taking as much money from Joe public and more and then wasting it. We had a tax incentive on Euro 4 car diesel emissions (3% less tax on company car) and then its taken away after 3yrs. This wonderful? treasury of ours is only interested in money, not trying to save the planet, because that will cost too much in incentives, be it tax breaks or cash in the short term, long term forget it.

I have just purchased a 95 Anniversary Linear sport biofuel & feel that from Mr Browns point of view if the car can run on petrol & there are very few E85 outlets he cant give much away. This is a catch 22 situation!

What do you expect from this governement? they have an obsession with taxing everyting as opposed to being inovative and looking for new solutions. Taxation has nothing to do with the environment and their solution is to try and rob motorists of as much money as possible.

I share the disappointment at the budget. I am activley looking at buying a biofuel car when I change my current vehicle in July. However, while I am interested in bio-poered Saab, the fact that there are no pumps near me in london is a major factor in my choice. Come on Gordon!!

The Chancellor is a devious and underhand man who has ripped the people of this country off time and time again There is no way this man should ever become PM.

publish these facts in big selling newspapers and imbbaris the goverment to a point were they are forced to down the VED ON GREEN VEHICLES

The budget, and in particular the lack of incentives given to get people to switch to more eco-friendly fuels, only serves to undermine the governments pledge to greatly reduce CO2 emmissions while fueling our belief that they are only interested in using Global Warming as an excuse to increase taxes. Afterall, if they do get people to switch to Bio-fuel by greatly reducing fuel tax then the treasuries coffers will be seriously reduced. I say let them put their money where their mouths are and prove they are serious about CO2 emmission reduction.

The government are only interested in the money they make from the fuel duty charged to all forms of transport. Its all just headlines to make the general public think they are making a positive contribution, but they have only moved the goal posts to the right a fraction of what is actually needed.

Great to see a Motor Company taking bio-fuels seriously. I sit on the Environmental Forum on Elmbridge Borough Council and we believe that this is the way forward.

Interested in this technology for my next company car. Do hope Saab do not price this range out of the normal reps brackets. It needs to be competitive with equivalent diesels.

The key issue is the availability of fuel...can you supply a map of current fuel stations and planned new openings and the programme for them. The other key issue will be for you to demonstrate that biofuels come from sustainably managed crops, and do not result in the destruction of important biodiversity resouces in places such as Borneo. I note the British Sugar connection...much better to use sugar as you propose than to rot peoples teeth with the stuff.

This is pretty impressive - a 2.0 litre engine producing 300 hp and 400 Nm of torque - just shows the potential of ethanol fuel, eh? Suppose its not a huge amount of use whilst E100 is not available to buy in the UK, but I guess that even on E85, this car would still enjoy huge power increases?

New bioethanol E85 pump opens in the South East

There has been a great deal of publicity this week about the publication of the Mayor of Londons Climate Change Action Plan, which trumpets ambitions for London to become one of the worlds leading cities in reducing harmful emissions.

The plan acknowledges that Transport is responsible for 22 per cent of London's emissions and sets out how annual transport emissions can be cut by 4.3 million tonnes. I quote CO2 emissions from road transport would fall by as much as 30 per cent if people simply bought the most fuel-efficient version of the car they want.

So why then no specific support for vehicles powered by biofuels? And in particular, no exemption from the London congestion charge for cars fuelled by bioethanol - as there is in Stockholm?

So far lots of talk from Ken Livingstone and his colleagues - now lets see some action!
